Newborn Gray Whale and Mother Swim Together Off San Diego Coast

Domenic Biagini of Gone Whale Watching San Diego captured drone footage of a newborn gray whale and its mother swimming off the Southern California coast on January 30.

Biagini told Storyful the calf featured in the video was one of the youngest gray whales he has ever filmed.

Biagini speculated the baby whale was less than a couple of hours old because it was not strong enough to swim for itself and its tail had not hardened yet

“You can see the mom lifting it [the calf] up on her back to help it breathe, and the baby sliding down the mom’s body!” said Biagini. “Its tail is just flopping all over the place rather uselessly!” Credit: Gone Whale Watching San Diego via Storyful
