Newcastle exit that will shave thousands off wage bill imminent as star looks to move on from spat

Newcastle United star Ryan Fraser is believed to have agreed personal terms with Southampton.

After spending last season on loan with the Saints and helping Russell Martin's side to promotion, the winger is keen on the move and has no future at Newcastle after being accused of lacking commitment by Eddie Howe. Chronicle Live understands that Fraser is now just waiting for a financial settlement from the Magpies.

Southampton have been in dialogue on a move for Fraser with Martin underlining his importance last season. He said: "He’s a really big character in the dressing room, so we lose something when he doesn’t play which is his relentless running ability, his ability to cross on the move, his desire to go and score and assist and work hard for the team and the others need to step up now."

Fraser was afforded a standing ovation at Wembley as he helped Southampton to a slender win over Leeds in May to earn the Saints a place in the Premier League. Speaking about his time on the South Coast last season the former Aberdeen and Bournemouth winger said: "I think everyone can see how much I’m enjoying it – it’s not a front that I’m putting on. I don’t think I’ve loved football this much for a long, long, long time."

Fraser or Howe have never lifted the lid on reasons why the winger suddenly became relegated to the reserves on Tyneside. His drop down to train with the kids coincided with his final appearance on a Newcastle squad sheet when he was an unused sub at his old club Bournemouth.

That day Cherries fans chanted: "Eddie, Eddie get him on", but he did not make an appearance at the Vitality Stadium. Since then Fraser has said: "Then obviously with the Eddie thing at the end, the media don’t know what’s happened so they couldn’t come out and say what’s happened, it was just that I was down in the Under-21s, so a lot of people just jump to things – they believe what they want to believe, because everyone’s got an opinion."

Fraser still has a year left on his Newcastle contract and earns around £70,000 a week after joining the Magpies in 2020 as a free agent.
