Newcastle upon Tyne North has seen large scale boundary changes for the general election, with less than half the former constituency remaining.

The changes have seen the constituency lose areas on the western fringes of Newcastle to three other seats (Newcastle Central and West, Hexham, and Cramlington and Killingworth) but bring in Jesmond, Kenton and parts of Gosforth from the two other seats in the city, as well as the Benton and Longbenton areas of North Tyneside.

The seat has been held by Labour since 1983, and by former solicitor Catherine McKinnell since 2010. A Shadow Education Minister, she is defending a majority of almost 6,000. Challengers include Liberal Democrat Aidan King, a doctor who stood as the party’s candidate to be North East mayor, and the Conservative candidate in that election, Guy Renner-Thompson.
