Newcastle notes: Toon owners get their wish, Keegan record smashed & moment Tino Asprilla would love

Newcastle United may be sitting in seventh place in the Premier League going into the final four games but the remarkable statistic to emerge from this season has to be their accomplishments in front of goal.

The Magpies have now netted an impressive 74 times this term and have eight more goals than the Kevin Keegan team that finished four points shy of the title in 1995/96. Despite the goals being spread round the team, Eddie Howe's side have also beaten the class of 1996/97 - a side that contained Alan Shearer, Les Ferdinand and Tino Asprilla - with the current team netting one more goal than the side Kenny Dalglish led to second spot.

After the game, Howe acknowledged that impressive tally but admitted that the hard work must continue. Howe told Chronicle Live: "When you start the season, you don't aim for that, but scoring goals is something we have to do and we want to do.

"I have said many times, we want to attack, we want to be known for being an attacking team, a team that's always looking for opportunities to score and to excite our unbelievable supporters and play the style of football that's in keeping with the traditions of the club, so to do that is a great thing.

"But of course, it's all about winning games, really, it's not about scoring goals as such in terms of the number, it's about winning as many games as you can. We've probably been too leaky the other way although we've been free-scoring, so there's certainly stuff for us to work on."

Co-owners have a visible presence to underline their commitment to black and white cause

Speaking at the FEVO Sport Industry Awards on Thursday, Amanda Staveley had spoken about her pride after Crystal Palace as Newcastle fans stood with their team in defeat. Her wish was to see Newcastle bounce back against Sheff United. Both co-owners Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi ventured down to the dressing room to revel in the second hammering of the season against Sheffield United.

It was a result that sent the Blades down and puts Newcastle on the brink of clinching a place in Europe. But in a month in which Ripon financier Staveley responded to talk she had resigned, it was clear that the football-loving couple wanted to celebrate the moment.

And celebrate they did by making their way down to the dressing room to join in the post-game team photo. The delighted duo then made their way back to the boardroom to continue the celebrations after an emphatic win.

Bruno's nod to Tino Asprilla

The day was all set up for Bruno Guimaraes to stamp his authority on the game after a fantastic pre-match banner was unveiled reading: "From Alianca & Rio to Newcastle upon Tyne, a home away from home, Joelinton & Bruno, our Geordie Brazilians".

That left Bruno with a tear in his eye with the star saying afterwards: "I was speaking to Joe in the changing rooms and we wanted to cry. It was very special."

His celebration wasn't bad either as he made his way to the corner flag to swing it in the air. It wasn't quite a Tino Asprilla against Metz in 1996, when the Colombian threaded his shirt to the pole and waved it like a flag, but it got the Gallowgate End in the mood with more goals on the way.
