Newcastle star cost club £7m after 'refusing' transfer before Callum Wilson ruined swap deal

A proposed deal to take Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Newcastle fell through after the Magpies were unable to offload Callum Wilson.

Newcastle had been keeping tabs on the Everton hitman for several months before finally making their move. Detailed discussions took place between the two clubs about a deal that would have seen Calvert-Lewin switch to St James' Park with the initial plan for Yankuba Minteh to head in the opposite direction and join the Toffees.

However, in a late turn of events, Telegraph Sport reported that negotiations broke down when Newcastle couldn't find a buyer for Wilson, leading to any potential deal for Calvert-Lewin being quickly dismissed. It is thought that Magpies boss Eddie Howe didn't want three specialist centre-forwards in his squad for the forthcoming season and, with no takers for Wilson, decided to pull the plug on the deal.

The decision by Newcastle to withdraw their interest in Calvert-Lewin also put an end to any speculation about Minteh moving to Everton. It is understood that Newcastle were prepared to sell Minteh to Everton and the Gambian international was keen on the idea of teaming up with Sean Dyche at Goodison Park, reports the Liverpool Echo.

The 19-year-old spent the previous season on loan at Feyenoord and attracted the attention of numerous clubs across Europe. Following his impressive loan stint, the winger was in high demand, with teams such as Marseille, Borussia Dortmund and Roma all believed to be interested in securing his services.

With Newcastle on the brink of a potential points deduction an agreement to sell Minteh to Lyon for £40million was struck just a week before the PSR accounting deadline. However, the winger declined the move to France with the youngster then costing the Magpies £7million after Brighton swooped in last weekend, securing Minteh's services for just £33million.

Any deal that would've seen Calvert-Lewin end up at St. James' Park hinged heavily on Minteh heading to Everton as part of the transfer. Newcastle's asking price for the player effectively ruled out Everton from a standard purchase, and with other clubs having been grappling with concerns over their standing in relation to Profit and Sustainability Regulations, a swap deal could have allowed both Everton and Newcastle to bolster their squads without breaching the rules.

Instead of joining Lyon, Minteh eventually elected to remain in the Premier League with Brighton and sealed his move to the Amex signing a five-year contract with the Seagulls.
