Newcastle transfer supremo on red alert after Liverpool contact for £100m rated Anthony Gordon

Incoming Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell will put the Anthony Gordon situation at St James' Park close to the top of his task list after being appointed as Toon supremo.

Gordon was part of a discussion with Liverpool last week as the attempted to raise funds to avoid any PSR punishment after a frantic finish to June. With no transfer chief in place Newcastle spoke about a cash plus swap deal involving centre-back Jarell Quansah.

Chronicle Live understands that contact between Newcastle and Liverpool did take place but the dust is now settling with the need to offload big names calming down.

Those talks broke down but after contact was established there are no guarantees that Liverpool won't revisit the prospect of signing Gordon. With the England international still on duty with the Three Lions until the weekend at least the Toon star will then be granted an extended holiday period and does not have to be at Benton for the beginning of pre-season.

Former Monaco sporting director Mitchell must now establish the seriousness of Liverpool's interest and test the water with Gordon and his representatives. The PSR affair has unsettled a clutch of Newcastle players and the club's willingness to trade has left some squad members with more questions than answers.

With Gordon, Newcastle may look at a new contract for the ex-Everton star with his current deal set to run out in 2026. Regardless of the position on Gordon, Newcastle still have deals to do and even in the aftermath of selling Yankubah Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest, another mini shake-up could be around the corner.

Chronicle Live understands that discussions with Martin Dubravka's agent have occurred in the last couple of days and a cash sale is likely. Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier have both been heavily linked with moves out of St James' Park and clarification on their positions is also expected.

Suggestions of an asking price of around £100million for Gordon, should Liverpool pursue the deal, have been bandied around in the aftermath of Newcastle's desperate scramble to avoid a points deduction last weekend.
