Newcastle United chief 'blown away' by club sponsor as 10,000 flock to event

Newcastle United's Chief Commercial Officer, Peter Silverstone, admits he has been blown away by the club's sponsor, Sela, since the Saudi events company arrived on Tyneside.

The company, who became Newcastle's front of shirt sponsor in 2023, put on an incredible light show on the city's Quayside on Saturday evening, with 10,000 spectators estimated to have flocked to the free event.

Iconic moments from the Magpies' history were shown on the side of the Baltic, as supporters watched the likes of Alan Shearer and David Ginola hit the back of the net from times gone by. Fans were also shown highlights from the current men’s and women’s squads, including Newcastle United Women’s promotion to the Championship earlier this year.

This isn't the first time Sela have pulled out the stops like this. Last year, to mark Newcastle's return to the Champions League, the company lit up the skyline with a fantastic drone show. They also earned plenty of praise for their groundbreaking haptic shirts which enabled fans who are deaf or have hearing loss to feel the atmosphere of the crowd for the first time earlier this season.

“Over the past 12 months we have been blown away by Sela’s capabilities in delivering spectacular experiences for Newcastle fans. The Club, our fans and the city of Newcastle, will never take these experiences for granted," Silverstone said on Saturday.

“From delivering the unforgettable Champions League drone show to making the St. James’ Park matchday experience more inclusive for members of the Deaf community through launching haptic shirts – Sela has demonstrated that it is a more than simply a ‘sponsor’ on the front of our shirts.

“Within the first year of our partnership, Sela has become entrenched in the local community and continues to create spectacular, purposeful memories that will last the tests of time. Sela has put our supporters at the heart of all their activities and we are so proud to have them as part of our Newcastle United family. Last night we were all one together.”
