Newcastle United involved in striker 'merry go round' as transfer window starts to heat up

Newcastle United's search for a striker continues in the aftermath of their attempts to snap up Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

With Callum Wilson a potential departure too, there is the prospect of a striker merry go round in the Premier League as opportunities open up in the top-flight. Eddie Howe still wants a winger, goalkeeper and a striker in the remainder of the window.

Here's some of the latest rumours from around the circuit.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Just days after Newcastle's enquiry for the 27-year-old and talks with Everton collapsed following the Toffees' £37m demand, the 11-times England international has been linked with a new club. Manchester United are the latest team to be credited with a move for the ex-Sheffield United man.

This comes after links with Newcastle, Brentford and West Ham and it is understood that the Blades will be due a percentage of his next sale due to a clause. The percentage due to Sheff United is due to be 20% hence his inflated valuation.

Callum Wilson

Wilson is on West Ham's wanted list with his close pal Michail Antonio being linked with a move in the other direction. Antonio's exit at the London Stadium could light up the path for Wilson.

Antonio, now 34, is at a crossroads in his career at West Ham with his current deal expiring but the option of an extra year also possible. Both Nottingham Forest and RB Leipzig have been linked with Antonio which could increase West Ham's chances of getting Wilson. Notably, the pair are represented by the same agency in USM.

Federico Gatti

The Juventus star was linked with Newcastle this morning but talk of a bid has been quickly shut down. Reports in Italy said that Newcastle had stepped up their enquiries for Gatti in today's edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport. A price tag of around £28million had been bandied around for Gatti by the newspaper. But sources have confirmed there has been no offer from St James' Park.
