Newcastle United to miss out on timely PSR boost ahead of 'unofficial' transfer deadline

The British transfer window may already be up and running but another key date for the diary is July 17th - the day Saudi Pro League sides can finally start conducting their summer business.

For Newcastle United, who could ease minor financial concerns by offloading some senior stars before the turn of the accounting year on June 30th, there will be no profit and sustainability rules [PSR] boost from clubs in the Middle East as was seen with the exit of Allan Saint-Maximin last summer.

Some key options in Eddie Howe's side continue to be linked with a range of Saudi clubs - some owned by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund and others with no affiliation to the wealth fund. Kieran Trippier and Miguel Almiron have both been tracked by outfits in the league and could choose to depart Tyneside for a major payday like so many of their former Premier League counterparts.

Callum Wilson and Martin Dubravka are other players who could well find themselves joining the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Riyad Mahrez in Saudi Arabia should they seek a new challenge away from St James' Park.

Howe knows full well that departures this summer would massively ease financial pressures as Newcastle attempt to recoup some of the £400million they have spent on new players since the 2021 takeover. Saint-Maximin's move to Al-Ahli last summer remains the most high profile exit under the new regime - even if some of the St James' Park faithful felt the Frenchman was sold for less than his true market value.

Newcastle know they will enjoy more financial freedom come July 1 and the subsequent start of a new accounting year but selling some players before that date would provide more breathing space between themselves and the PSR limits which state clubs cannot lose more than £105million over a three-year period.

With the unofficial 'deadline day' fast approaching, Newcastle are listening to offers for some much-loved figures already mentioned. There is also ongoing speculation over youngsters such as Yankuba Minteh, who could be offloaded granted sufficient interest emerges to hand the Magpies a big boost to their summer kitty.

Bruno Guimaraes' £100m release clause is also nearing its end, with Newcastle confident they will be able to keep the Brazilian beyond this summer. Should no suitor trigger the clause in the coming days, it is extremely unlikely a higher offer will emerge for his services - with Howe and his transfer team unwilling to sell for lower than nine figures.

In terms of incomings, Lloyd Kelly has already signed on a free transfer and Lewis Hall's permanent Newcastle switch, which has been common knowledge for months, will become official on July 1, meaning the obligatory £28m transfer fee is on next year's books.
