Newcastle United notebook: £40million man scouted again, Castore's last stand & Joelinton blow

Newcastle United scouts have been back in the stands at Stamford Bridge ahead of the eagerly anticipated summer transfer window.

Chronicle Live reported on April 18 that Conor Gallagher had been checked out by United as the Blues look to sell the Academy product. Gallagher has been the subject of loan interest from Newcastle before but Chelsea are keen to do a deal with a Premier League rival in order to land pure profit for the star.

Gallagher's future at Chelsea looks ominous after talks on a new contract reached an impasse and with the midfielder's current deal set to expire in 2025, he could leave this summer. Newcastle are keeping their options open in terms of midfielders knowing that they may have to sell to buy this summer.

A fee of £40million for Gallagher has been mooted with the star currently earning around £50,000 per week. Both Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham are thought to be keen.

Newcastle scouts were at Chelsea's recent 4-3 win over Man United and they have been back since in the 2-0 win over Spurs.

Castore's last stand to come on tour of Australia

As we all know by now, Adidas will become the club's new shirt manufacturer this summer after the Magpies agreed a £40million a year deal with the German giants. It means that the last Premier League home game against Brighton will be the last home supporters see of Castore with their signs soon to be taken down at the Gallowgate End.

But with the Adidas contract not starting until June, there will be two more games for Castore to showcase their product on the global market in Toon games against Spurs and the Australian A-League all-stars. A fire sale is now well under way at the Gallowgate End club shop with adult shirts as low as £15 but the upstairs of the building has now shut down and Castore are down to their last few remaining pieces.

Bruno joy and Joelinton blow

There were mixed emotions for Newcastle as Brazil named their squad for the Copa America on Friday night.

Bruno Guimaraes celebrated his call-up in coach Dorival Jr's 23-man for the tournament in the US this summer. But there was no place for Joelinton with his thigh injury and operation earlier this year costing him a place in the States.

Joelinton has only made one cameo appearance for Newcastle since January and is not close to being fully fit. Douglas Luiz (Aston Villa), Andreas Pereira (Fulham), Joao Gomes (Wolves) and Lucas Paqueta (West Ham) were included instead.

Man United midfielder Casemiro was not picked plus Tottenham forward Richarlison, Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus and Casemiro's Old Trafford team-mate Antony also missed out.

Anthony Gordon wins internal club player of the year award at St James' Park

Gordon may have been overlooked by the Premier League in the young player of the year award. But there was better news on Friday as he was named as the club's own senior player of the year.

A United statement read: "We’re delighted to announce that Anthony Gordon has picked up Newcastle United’s official Player of the Year award for 2023/24.

"The Merseysider has had an outstanding first full campaign in black and white, providing ten goals and ten assists in the Premier League, as well as being involved in all six of the Magpies’ Champions League fixtures."

The award was first won 47 years ago by Alan Gowling in 1975/76 Alan Gowling and has been won by big-names such as Alan Shearer, Nobby Solano, David Batty and Andy Cole. Last season the gong went to Kieran Trippier.
