Ruth Jones has held the Labour seat of Newport West and Islwyn. Labour had been odds on favourite for this seat.

As part of the review of boundaries for constituencies, two Labour seats are being merged into the Newport West and Islwyn seat. Part of the existing Newport West constituency has been moved into the Newport East patch, the rest is joining Islwyn.

The aim of the review was to shrink the number of seats in Wales from 40 to 32 to create more evenly-sized constituencies.
