Earlier this week it was named 2012's top grossing movie, raking in a massive $1.51 billion globally. But it seems box office figures aren't everything as Josh Whedon's superhero ensemble 'The Avengers Assemble' is also voted the most overrated movie of last year.

An online survey conducted by The Los Angeles Times found the comic caper starring Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr and Scarlett Johansson among others, to be the most overrrated movie of the year, scoring 85% of the votes.

The film stormed the vote with nearest contender, Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus' coming in at second place with less than 5%. Other contenders included Seth MacFarlane's black comedy 'Ted', Pixar's 'Brave' and Paul Thomas Anderson's 'The Master'.

Last year's poll winner was Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson's love fest 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1.'

It hasn't all been bad news for the Avengers though with the summer blockbuster beating big hitters 'Skyfall' and 'The Dark Knight Rises' to top the annual global box office stats

Whedon has also announced a sequel which is expected to bring back most of the big name cast including Hemsworth who today was announced as the new favourite to take the lead in the Fifty Shades of Grey movie...
