Bob Hoskins Dies: Dame Helen Mirren, Samuel L. Jackson Among Celebrities To React

Bob Hoskins died at the age of 71 earlier today and his death has been felt by Hollywood with the likes of Dame Helen Mirren and Samuel L. Jackson among those to pay tribute.

The British actor, who was best known for his roles in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Mona Lisa and Hook, died at a hospital surrounded by his family today after suffering with pneumonia.

Confirming the sad news, Hoskins' wife Linda and children Alex, Sarah, Rosa and Jack said in a statement: “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Bob. Bob died peacefully at hospital last night surrounded by family, following a bout of pneumonia.

“We ask that you respect our privacy during this time and thank you for your messages of love and support.”

Twitter has been flooded with an outpouring of condolences from those who worked with Hoskins in the past and other movie stars.

Sir Michael Caine who worked with Hoskins in the films Sweet Liberty and Last Orders, described him as “one of the nicest and best actors I have ever worked with.”

Dame Helen Mirren, who starred as his wife in The Long Good Friday, said: “Bob was a great actor and an even greater man. Funny, loyal, instinctive, hard-working, with that inimitable energy that seemed like a spectacular firework rocket just as it takes off.

“I personally will miss him very much, London will miss one of her best and most loving sons, and Britain will miss a man to be proud of.”

James Woods, who appeared alongside Hoskins in the 1995 film Nixon, said: “Oh man, what a terrible loss. A great guy and a superb artist.”

Samuel L. Jackson expressed his sadness at the loss, tweeting: “Truly saddened by the passing of Bob Hoskins! A truly Gigantic talent & a Gentleman. R.I.P.”
