'The Dark Knight Rises' Less Successful Than Tim Burton's Batman

If you asked anyone what the biggest Batman movie ever was they'd probably say 'The Dark Knight Rises' would either top the list or be closed behind 'The Dark Knight'.

However data from movie stats site BoxOfficeMojo shows that the assumption that Nolan's 'The Dark Knight Rises' is the biggest Batman outing is wrong.

Predictably it's 2008's 'The Dark Knight' which tops the list.

Yet despite the critical acclaim heaped on 'Rises', it isn't even the second most successful Batman, with that honour going to Tim Burton's 1989 effort 'Batman'.

Comparing The Dark Knight Rises to Burton’s Batman on ticket sales and Burton's movie beats Nolan's final film hands down. 'Batman' sold a sum total of 62,954,600 tickets (at a mega cheap value of $3.97) compared to The Dark Knight Rises which has so far sold 50,635,700 and an average ticket price of $8.07 in the US.

The gap of 10m is particularly large, and Nolan's movie is unlikely to be able to catch it up.

Burton's film featured Michael Keaton as the titular character and Jack Nicholson as The Joker, it spawned a series of films  with 'Batman Returns' the second film in the series featuring Michelle Pfeiffer and Danny DeVito joining Keaton.
