Doctor Who Speculation Laughed Off By Domhnall Gleeson

Harry Potter actor Domhnall Gleeson has strongly denied rumours that he could replace Matt Smith as the Timelord himself in Doctor Who, saying it's a "laughable" idea.

Gleeson, who will next be seen alongside Rachel McAdams in Richard Curtis's new romcom About Time, said he heard about the speculation from his agent.

Speaking to RTE Ten, he said: "There's nothing to [it]. I heard about it from my agent [who] sent me a website, [and was] laughing about the fact that people were saying that I was being talked about.

"I was like, 'That's lovely: my own agent is laughing at the idea!'."

He verified: "So, it's not true and there's nothing you can do about people just spouting a whole load of s***e on the internet!"

The Bill Weasley actor is, however, a fan of the show. "It's a great series," he said. "Matt Smith's a fantastic actor. David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston – all the guys are amazing. So it was a lovely thought, but it's not true."

The BBC had to shoot down speculation last week that Rory Kinnear had been offered the coveted part, after bookies even stopped taking bets.

A BBC drama spokesperson said an announcement is still a long way off, revealing: “The Doctor is one of the biggest roles in TV and speculation around the identity of who will be next to step in to the TARDIS is rife, but the search has only just begun so only believe what you hear from us, and that won't be for a while!”
