With Matt Smith announcing his departure from Doctor Who, there has been much speculation about who will replace him. One name that has been suggested is that of Homeland actor David Hareweood who has explained that if he is given the role, he will turn the iconic character into a "bad***".

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about the rumours and his link to the show, the actor said: "Not to... put too dark a pun on it, but I would make him darker. I would like to make this guy a bit of a bad*** if I was to do it."

However, the actor was quick to add that it is unlikely that he will be handed the role to play the 12th Doctor Who.

He said: "It's only rumours but it's amazing to be attached to such an iconic role. It would be extraordinary if the BBC were to make me the first black Doctor Who, it would be extraordinary. But I'm almost scared to make any comment whatsoever."

Revealing that a previous role in the BBC sci-fi drama might also hinder his chances, David continued: "I was in David Tennant's final episode... so [me replacing Matt Smith] probably wouldn't happen anyway."

Meanwhile, amid the claims that the new Doctor could be announced next month, RadioTimes.co.uk have now reported on a BBC source informing them that the release of the actor, who will become the 12th Doctor, will be in August or September.

With filming for the new series and the Christmas special set to begin filming later this year, it has been claimed that this will be the time where the identity of Matt's replacement will be revealed.
