Elton John: 'Amy Winehouse's Death Was One Of The Greatest Tragedies'

Elton John has paid tribute to Amy Winehouse just days ahead of the first anniversary of the singer's untimely death.

Elton has told The Sun that he cannot believe it's almost been a year since the 27-year-old died in her London home on July 23 2011:

"It's incredible that it's been a year. It's one of the greatest tragedies. I saw her at the Shepherds Bush Empire when she’d just got married to Blake. It was a sensational show."

Elton said he told Amy how impressed he was with her after the show:

"I saw her afterwards and said, 'I've seen all the great singers, and you're up there with all of them'. She never really recorded that much. She made two albums and bits and bobs which came out on Lioness, that's it. You have to feel for her parents and family."

The first anniversary of the death falls on Monday. It's hard to believe it was 12 months ago the 'Back to Black' singer was discovered dead in her Camden home. Coroners later confirmed that the singer, who had battled drink and drug addiction for several years, had died of alcohol poisoning. 

It's been revealed that two further posthumous albums are in the works. The first compilation of previously unreleased recordings, 'Lioness: Hidden Treasures', was released in aid of the foundation set up in Amy's name last December. It debuted at Number One on the UK albums chart and has since gone double platinum. Earlier this month Amy's father Mitch revealed that two further albums are planned to help benefit the charity.
