Gotham Star Benjamin McKenzie Explains Nasty Set Injury As First Episode Premieres

Benjamin McKenzie literally put his blood, sweat and tears into filming Batman prequel Gotham as the actor acquired a rather nasty head injury on set earlier this month and shared the queasy photo with his Instagram followers, and he has now explained exactly how it happened.

The prequel, which premiered last night on Fox in the US, features McKenzie as Commissioner James Gordon and focuses on his rise to prominence in the city of Gotham before the Dark Knight aka Batman makes his arrival and takes over. Filming didn’t exactly go without a hitch though as McKenzie suffered a pretty painful injury while shooting a fight scene this month and posted a photo of the bloody gash on Instagram with the caption: “Happy Birthday to me. Fight sequence gone awry. Don't ram your head into concrete pillars kids. #gotham.” Ouch!

Explaining why he chose to post a photo before news got out, McKenzie told E! News: “I decided I would just turn it into a positive. I'd Instagram out some photos, 'cause god forbid the tabloid press got a hold of it and it was like," McKenzie said, gesticulating dramatically and miming a headline, "Injured! Is He Dead?!' or something like that. I was fine. Took a couple Advil.”

McKenzie went into further detail on how the injury happened, telling the Today show yesterday: “I was driving a guy back into a concrete wall - or a pillar - about three feet wide. The first time I did it correctly. The second time I caught the edge of it with my head.”

Gotham, which also stars Jada Pinkett Smith and Donal Logue, got off to a great start yesterday receiving mostly positive reviews from viewers who commented on Twitter, including @iamledgin who wrote: “If you watched Batman and thought, "This needs WAY more Commissioner Gordon and also zero Batman," you will love Gotham,” while @SankethJain is in for the long haul, adding: “Just watched the first episode of @Gotham. Loved it. 14 episodes this season is going to be exciting.”

@joshuabeau simply commented: “Yup. I love Gotham,” while @HeyItsJayk chimed in: “Gotham has impressed me so much. Such a great show!!” However, not everyone was entirely impressed with @iSMOKEuCHOKE countering: “Just saw Gotham and i was not that impressed,” as did @JordynRenaeCorr who tweeted: “I had such high hopes for Gotham not impressed so far.”
