Sir Paul McCartney To Receive Special Songwriter's Songwriter Accolade At NME Awards

Sir Paul McCartney will be honoured with NME's special Songwriter's Songwriter award this month and is expected to be in attendance to accept the one-off accolade in person.

The Beatles legend, who released his latest solo album 'New' last year, will be making an appearance at the 2014 NME Awards on February 26 taking place at Brixton's O2 Academy to accept the coveted gong after being chosen by the world's leading songwriters who voted him the “best practitioner of their craft.”

Sir Paul won't be the only won to receive a special award though as Glasgow-based band Belle & Sebastian have been confirmed as the recipients of the Teenage Cancer Trust Oustanding Contribution to Music Award.

Speaking of their win, Belle & Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch said: “We’ve just kept our head down. We’re the Status Quo of indie, we’re still here – maybe that’s the thing. We’re a baroque pop band that came up in the mid-90s, during Britpop, and we’re still here!”

NME's editor Mike Williams also said: “We've spoken to the biggest and best musicians around, and they've told us: Paul McCartney is the world's ultimate songwriter. Paul's enduring and stunning talent is worth celebrating, and I'm incredibly honoured that NME are giving him the special, one-of-its-kind Songwriter's Songwriter award to recognise that.

“I'm equally thrilled for us to be singling out Belle & Sebastian at this year's ceremony, an act who have always had a special place in our readers’ hearts and minds. And of course, to have Huw Stephens – a man who's probably the most respected young DJ around, as well as a friend to practically every band in the room – presenting on the night is a dream come true too.”

Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens, who will be hosting this year's ceremony, revealed his excitement at the upcoming event: “I’m super excited about hosting the NME Awards with Austin, Texas. I’ve bought NME every week since I was 15. So, to host the prestigious event, well, what an honour!”
