Conservative Paul Howell made headlines and secured a visit from Prime Minister Boris Johnson in 2019 when he won Tony Blair’s former Sedgefield seat in the general election.

The Newton Aycliffe and Spennymoor constituency has been re-drawn and re-named after its two largest communities. It also contains villages including Coxhoe, Trimdon and Tudhoe.

Mr Howell is hoping to hold on to Sedgefield but will face a strong challenge from Labour’s Alan Strickland, who grew up in the constituency and has previously been a councillor in London. The constituency has a packed field with eight candidates running.
