Nick Kroll Thinks ‘Door Is Open’ on ‘Big Mouth’ Future Despite Final Season

While Nick Kroll’s eight-season-long coming-of-age animated comedy “Big Mouth” may be approaching finality, the writer and voice actor behind over 70 characters on the show doesn’t believe there aren’t more stories to tell. In a similar way to how Michael Apted’s “Up” series or even the recent “Inside Out 2” handles how one grows into an adult, Kroll thinks it makes sense for “Big Mouth” to follow its characters throughout life as well.

“The beauty of telling stories about kids who are evolving is that it never gets tired,” Kroll said in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “And you’re always finding new elements, new stories to tell and new emotions for those kids … because the show itself does not stand still, it makes it more gratifying to perform.”

Though the show skews towards the crass, part of its magic is in how incredibly accurate its portrayals of puberty and the life lessons learned around this age are. Kroll cares about not just making something funny but engaging in a genuine conversation. He said this comes as a result of a partnership with health educator Shafia Zaloom and her students at the Urban School in San Francisco, who critique the “Big Mouth” writers on what’s working and what’s not.

“Every season, we have long conversations and try to understand emotionally what these kids are going through psychologically and scientifically,” said Kroll. “But also talk to kids and be like, ‘Here’s what’s happening to our schools. Here’s what’s happening with kids right now. Here’s what didn’t feel true to us about last season.’”

Holding onto the idea that no person should ever stop growing and that there will always be disgusting things to examine at every stage of life, Kroll isn’t giving up on the idea of a future for his characters. Mostly because they’re all so connected to him in one way or another.

“It’s an incredibly personal story,” he said to The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s based on my life. I’ve been so invested in their lives for so many reasons. And I love these kids, and I love the monsters, and I love the parents. We ended it, and the door is open to come back and visit these kids down the line.”
