Strictly's Nicola Adams reveals she wanted to kill her violent father when she was 9

Strictly Come Dancing star Nicola Adams has revealed she wanted to kill her violent father and bury him in the garden when she was a nine-year-old.

The double Olympic medal-winning boxer opened up about her tough start in life which saw her father lash out at her and her mum Dee.

She said they finally left the abusive relationship when Adams saw a TV show which depicted a violent dad being killed by his family and buried in the back garden - and suggested to her mum they do the same thing.

Talking about her dad, she told the Mail Online: “He’d get violent with both of us. Because I have ADHD, when I was younger I was very hyperactive, so it was very, very hard for me to keep still so I was always getting into trouble with my dad. Sometimes, I felt, I was getting hit for no reason.

“It got to the point when I was around nine that I told my mum that I thought we needed to leave. I was watching a TV show about a family that was going through the same sort of situation we were. They ended up killing the father and burying him in the garden.

“I remember saying to my mum: “It’s going to be OK, I’ve seen a way we can get rid of Dad on TV, I just don’t know where we’re going to put the body because our garden is concrete’.”

Adams went on to say the suggestion was “a pretty big wake-up call” for her mum, who left the relationship and found somewhere else to live.

The former boxer is about to take part in the 2020 series of Strictly and made headlines when it was announced she would be part of the show’s first ever same-sex couple.

She told The Daily Star recently: “It was important to me because of diversity. I just wanted to do something different and I didn't get the big deal being paired with another female.

"We go to nightclubs and girls dance with girls all the time and professional female dancers dance with girls all the time, so I don't think it's a big deal."

She continued: "I think it's really good to be able to show diversity for the younger generation.

"It's nice for members of the LGBT community to be able to think to themselves, ‘That could be me one day dancing on Strictly.’”
