Nicole Kidman Recalls Throwing a Rock Through a Window After Keeping Emotions 'Pent Up' amid “Big Little Lies”

Kidman admitted that certain roles, such as playing Celeste Wright in 'Big Little Lies', are "very tough on the psyche"

Nicole Kidman is reflecting on the emotional toll of taking on dark roles including starring as Celeste Wright on Big Little Lies.

During The Hollywood Reporter's roundtable conversation featuring Kidman, Jodie Foster, Brie Larson, Naomi Watts, Jennifer Aniston, Ana Sawai and Sofía Vergara, the 56-year-old actress recalled throwing a rock through a door after shooting Big Little Lies.

“I threw a rock because [the door] was locked and I couldn’t get in,” she explained. “I’d never done that in my life.”

“I obviously [had a lot] pent up. I broke the whole thing. It cost a fortune,”  she added with a laugh.

The Oscar winner also recalled telling her Big Little Lies costar Alexander Skarsgård and season 1 director Jean-Marc Vallée, who died of a heart attack at age 58 in December 2021, about the incident.

“And then I went back the next day and I said to Alexander [Skarsgard] and Jean-Marc [Vallée], ‘I threw a rock through the window,’ and they were like, ‘Whoa …’ I said, 'I was kind of pissed off,’” she shared.

“But there’s a way in which we operate where the show must go on, and so you just keep going — you show up and you do it and do it and do it and do it,” she continued. “And a lot of times, it’s six months of 12-, 14-hour days and there really isn’t the time to go, ‘I need to take care of myself.’”

Kidman admitted that the HBO drama series was not the only show which took a toll on her mental health.

“After Expats, I went and did a comedy because I went crazy with my own psychology. I was like, ‘This is unhealthy,’” she recalled. “And it’s something that I think we need to talk about as actors — protecting your body so that you can live for as long as you are given on this earth. Because it’s very tough on the psyche.”

“The body doesn’t know that what you’re going through [isn’t real],” Vergara, 51, added.

Kidman agreed, sharing, “It doesn’t. But the idea of being able to go and get a massage or a hot bath or even a pat on the back, just someone touching you and going, ‘It’s OK.’”

“Got a little teared up when you just said that,” Aniston, 55, responded and Kidman added, “But the reach out for each other is so important.”

Kidman’s comments come after she reunited with her Big Little Lies costars Reese Witherspoon and Meryl Streep at the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award Gala Tribute, where she was honored, on April 26.

In November 2023, Kidman teased the possibility that a third season of the limited series is on the horizon while taking part in an undisclosed fan event, as seen in a video shared on Instagram by DeuxMoi.

“I loved Big Little Lies because it sort of came along at a time in my life when I had my children, and I was thinking I was going to retire, and then this situation came along, where Reese Witherspoon and I were able to produce that show,” Kidman said. “And then all of you watched it and made it a massive success.”

“And we will be bringing you a third one, just FYI,” the star then added.

Big Little Lies premiered in 2017 and was based on Liane Moriarty’s book of the same name. It starred Kidman, as well as Witherspoon, 48, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Zoë Kravitz in the lead roles.

The series followed the lives of a group of wealthy parents in Monterey, California, as they dealt with a murder that affected their community. A second season followed in 2019, with Streep, 74, joining the cast as Kidman’s on-screen mother-in-law.

The show also starred Alexander Skarsgård, Adam Scott, Kathryn Newton, James Tupper and Jeffrey Nordling, among others.
