'What a night!': Take That join Lulu on stage at Manchester gig for surprise performance

Take That made a surprise appearance on stage in Manchester last night as they joined Lulu for a rendition of their classic song together.

Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald joined the Scottish singer during her Champagne for Lulu tour at the Bridgewater Hall on Wednesday night (April 10).

The tour, billed as a farewell show to mark her 75th birthday year, saw Lulu perform some of her greatest hits, including Shout, and teased that there would be special guests appearing during each gig.

Seemingly unaware the boys were backstage, Lulu began by speaking about her time working with Take That on 1993 hit Relight My Fire. "I got to make this record with these incredible guys," she told the audience. "They were so cool, so cute, I mean, talk about being rebooted and relit! They're my family. They're absolutely my family right now.

"I absolutely have to sing this song and I absolutely have to dedicate it to the boys, Take That." To the surprise of the audience, the three members of the 90s boy band then walked on stage to join her in the 1993 song - which caught Lulu by surprise.

Joking that they were a 'mirage', she told the audience: "Oh my god, you know how hard they are working on their tour? You took the time to come out?" "We love you lulu," Gary said as the song began to huge cheers.

Following the performance, the boys bowed down to Lulu as she told them: "You boys are more men! you're the best. Let's hear it for Take That! How good were they?"

Posting on social media after the show, The Bridgewater Hall shared on X: “Last night Lulu came to town & brought some very special friends. The Scottish legend thrilled a sold out Bridgewater Hall with her back catalogue, taking us through many decades and was joined on stage by none other than @takethat for the 93 hit Relight My Fire. What a night!”

The band, who will be headlining their own Malta weekender festival later this year, will be returning to Manchester in May and June with a whopping seven dates at Co-op Live, where they will be joined by special guest Olly Murs.

Later this week, Lulu will head to The Glasshouse in Gateshead and the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton, before rounding up the tour in Birmingham's Symphony Hall on Monday (April 15) and the London Palladium on May 17.

Speaking to Lorraine at the start of the year, Lulu said of the tour: "This is the first time I have said this but this is a farewell tour. I did a tour last year which was gruelling for many reasons,” she continued. “I don’t have to go into them all but I’m 75, I don’t feel it but I am.”

She added: “I thought it’s got to be a celebration because you know how much I love to sing.”
