Contains spoilers for The Night Manager season one.

When The Night Manager aired on the BBC back in 2016, it was a huge hit. The series, starring Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie, Elizabeth Debicki and Olivia Colman was met with huge praise and earned awards from BAFTA, the Primetime Emmys and Golden Globes.

But despite how well received the series was, a follow-up season hasn’t materialised as quickly as many people hoped. In fact, it’s seemed at times like it might not happen at all.

Currently, it’s looking like there will be a second season of the drama. Here’s what we know about it…

The Night Manager season 2: Is it happening?

It seems so!

Susanne Bier, who directed series one, told Radio Times in 2019 that while she won’t be at the helm of season two, the process of making it is in motion.

“I’m not doing Night Manager 2. I wasn’t sure that I would do my very best work the second time round – so I decided that I should probably not do it and have somebody [else direct it],” she said.

“I just got worried that I would repeat myself or do something which wasn’t as great, but I think somebody else is going to do an amazing job out of it.”

Speaking about the process of making the series, she added: “There is progress, but nothing that I can talk of.”

This is great news for fans of the show as in September 2018 producer Simon Cornwell hinted season two might not happen.

Let’s hope we’ll be getting more positive news about The Night Manager 2 from now on.

The Night Manager season 2: Who’s in it?

If and when the series does happen, expect to see Tom Hiddleston return as hotel night manager Jonathan Pine, Hugh Laurie as arms dealer Richard Roper, Olivia Colman as intelligence operative Angela Burr and Elizabeth Debicki as Jed Marshall, Roper’s girlfriend.

Of course, these A-Listers have busy schedules, so the challenge for the BBC will be getting everyone filming in the same place at the same time.

The Night Manager season 2: What will happen?

Given season one was based on a standalone book, series two would have to centred on fresh story lines. That means, excitingly, we have no idea what could happen in the next batch of episodes.

Thinking back to season one, a second series could resume with Jonathan visiting Jed and her son in America as he promised, and reveal what happened to Roper after he was ambiguously driven away in a van.

For now, we wait and see…
