Nintendo's new voice of Mario and Luigi has been confirmed, after veteran actor Charles Martinet announced his retirement.

When the latest 2D Mario game, Super Mario Bros Wonder, was announced for Nintendo Switch, fans thought Mario's voice sounded different. Martinet, who has been with the franchise since the 1990s, announced his retirement shortly after.

Now, Kevin Afghani has confirmed that he is the new voice of both Mario and Luigi, announcing on Twitter/X: "Incredibly proud to have voiced Mario and Luigi in Super Mario Bros Wonder. Thanks to Nintendo for inviting me into the Flower Kingdom!"

Similar to Martinet, Afghani only has a handful of credits to his name before being cast as the gaming icons. He previously provided the voice of Arthur in Genshin Impact, and Goku's brother Raditz in the Team Four Star-adjacent fan series Dragon Ball R&R.

Looking at his socials, he's a big gamer, enjoying things like Baldur's Gate 3, Pikmin, Elden Ring, and both Pokémon and Digimon.

When Martinet's retirement was announced, a Nintendo statement read: "Charles is now moving into the brand-new role of Mario Ambassador.

"With this transition, he will be stepping back from recording character voices for our games, but he'll continue to travel the world sharing the joy of Mario and interacting with you all! It has been an honor working with Charles to help bring Mario to life for so many years and we want to thank and celebrate him."

Super Mario Bros Wonder twists the usual formula by introducing a power-up that allows our heroes to turn into elephants, while other items do thing like making warp pipes come to life.

Super Mario Bros Wonder will be released on Nintendo Switch on October 20.
