Norfolk Southern Train Derails in Calhoun County, Alabama, Hours Before CEO Testifies in Congress

Cleanup was underway in east-central Alabama’s Calhoun County, after a Norfolk Southern train derailed in the area on Thursday, March 9, hours before CEO of the train company Alan Shaw was due to testify in Congress.

Footage captured by Nathan Young shows several train carriages piled up at the site of the derailment on Thursday morning.

Later that morning, Shaw met with lawmakers in Congress to address the derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, that led to a toxic chemical spill, controlled burn and mass evacuation in the town.

By Thursday afternoon, Calhoun County’s Emergency Management Agency said all fire departments left the scene, and Norfolk Southern would remain on site until cleanup was completed.

There were no injuries or reports of danger to the public, they added. Credit: Nathan Young/Geek Alabama via Storyful
