Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones are teasing something big on the horizon!

On May 28, Edgar-Jones took fans by storm when she posted a selfie with her Normal People costar on her Instagram Stories. The duo could be seen holding up peace signs as they grinned from ear-to-ear.

"We've got some news to share!!" she captioned the post. "Watch this space."

The photo was also shared on the Instagram Stories of Element Pictures, the production company behind Normal People. As a result, fans went wild on social media, assuming the two fingers each actor held up and their reference to "news" meant there may be plans for a second season of the Hulu series.

"WHAT?!? Normal People season 2? Daisy and Paul you’re playing with my emotions and I’m not here for it!!!" wrote one fan, as another added, "if they announce normal people season 2 i might cry"

"if the [peace] sign they are making are for season 2 of Normal People im gonna scream," wrote someone else.

Reps at Hulu and Element Pictures did not respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Based on Sally Rooney's bestselling novel, Normal People premiered in April 2020 and followed the complicated romance that develops between Marianne (Edgar-Jones) and Connell (Mescal) from high school through college. She is a highly intelligent outsider from a wealthy family; he is a shy jock, part of the popular crowd, and his mother happens to clean Marianne's family's home. Their attraction is undeniable and sets in motion a many years-long affair that changes them both forever.

Since the 12 episode series took the world by storm, the two costars have reunited over the years for casual hangouts and on red carpet events like the Met Gala.

In August 2020, Edgar-Jones and Mescal opened up to PEOPLE about their “easy” on-screen and off-screen connection — the latter of which they have maintained since.

"We got cast and we were lucky we had two weeks [of] rehearsals beforehand,” she said of their bond at the time. “It was really funny, we laugh now but we were really polite with each other and very serious when we were first chatting, just because it’s a strange thing. And within the first week of filming we were both cracking up over the stupidest things. I think we have a very similar sense of humor, which is really good.”

Mescal also gave insight into the duo's sex scenes and why he felt "totally empowered and safe throughout the whole process."

"I think that is the key to getting sex scenes right on-screen," he explained. "Because ultimately if me and Daisy felt insecure — and don’t get me wrong, they are difficult things to film — there’s an unnatural element to them, but ultimately, when the process makes you feel safe and creative and open, it’s gonna make the sex scenes better.

"And I think it’s important to represent sex accurately on-screen,” he added.
