Unconfirmed reports from defectors claim that people living near the Punggye-ri test site suffer from mysterious symptoms and that babies have been born deformed.

Defector Lee Jeong-hwa said, ‘So many people died we began calling it ‘ghost disease’.

So far, radiation tests on defectors, including Ms Lee have come back negative.

Sensors in the region have also failed to pick up any trace of radiation, after multiple detonations at the site.

Chinese nuclear expert Wei Shijie said, ‘It is just a matter of time to detect it, because there are cracks on mountains where radioactive substances will leak.’
