Foreign Office Minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan is defending a healthy majority in what used to be the Berwick seat and has been renamed North Northumberland. Labour candidate David Smith currently runs a charity in Gateshead, while Natalie Younes is running for the Lib Dems.

The presence of Berwick independent councillor Georgina Hill, who previously worked for Ms Trevelyan, will also add some spice to the contest. Ms Trevelyan is probably the highest ranking Conservative in the North East, having been a Cabinet Minister at various points during her party’s reign.

The issue of the A1 has become an election battleground again, with a Government pledge to dual the road two days after the calling of the election being mocked by political opponents. Boundary changes have seen the town of Morpeth added to the constituency.
