North Wales council to shut recycling centres two days a week to save cash

A council in North Wales will shut its household recycling centres two days a week to save cash. Every local authority in Wales is currently battling to deal with squeezed budgets after runaway inflation and tighter public sector funding.

This is seeing difficult decisions being made on the funding of crucial services likes schools and libraries. Now Flintshire council is to reduce the days that its household tips will open.

They are being cut from seven days a week to five. There will be one day (Wednesday) when all the recycling sites will be closed.

Mold, Oakenholt and Sandycroft will now close on Wednesdays and Thursdays while Greenfield and Buckley sites will shut on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The changes will come in from May 6.

Flintshire council said: "In light of the budget position that Flintshire has experienced this year, and is expected to face for 2025/26 we have had to put in significant measures which aim to reduce costs and preserve jobs. Various factors have been carefully considered in revising the opening days and hours.

"These include site usage patterns, operational efficiency, and the need to deliver HRC services within the agreed reduced available budget."

They said no jobs are being lost as a result of the changes and they did not expect it to impact its recycling rates.

The council added: "There are no restrictions on what site you can use, if your nearest site is closed, please use your next available site. On the occasion when all sites are closed (Wednesday) please store your materials safely at home until the next available day for disposal. Please note that this does not apply to those with a vehicle or trailer permit."
