Michael Dunlop admits he is struggling to hit top form following his crash at the Cookstown 100, despite claiming three podium finishes in Thursday night's opening races at the North West 200.

Dunlop finished third in the Superbikes behind Glenn Irwin and Davey Todd, and had to settle for the same position in both the Supersport and Superstock classes.

The 35-year-old says the injury he is carrying "is not practical" as he prepares for a rest day on Friday and then more racing on Saturday.

Reflecting on his podium finishes on Thursday, Dunlop told the BBC: "It has been steady. But to be honest with you I haven't been at the best place to get the best out of the bike. The boys have worked hard and it has been a hectic week. We have made steps with the bike and we have to keep chipping away.

"The bike is singing, but I haven't been able to get the best out of it yet. It is hard, the injury I am carrying is not practical, that's for sure. But we're not here to cry about it. We have to batter on with it, but it is not practical. That's the long and short of it."

Irwin and Todd fought out a thrilling Superbike contest before Irwin claimed the chequered flag, and his ninth successive win in the blue riband class.

Todd crashed out of the Supersports after Adam McLean clattered into the Saltburn man at York Corner, in a race won by Richard Cooper who finished in front of Peter Hickman and Dunlop.

Todd recovered to win the final Superstock race, ahead of Dean Harrison, with Dunlop again having to settle for third.

"These other boys are riding these bikes every week. Week in, week out. And I am just getting to grips with it," Dunlop added.

"We will get a day's rest and more work done and we will rock and roll on Saturday.

"There is more to come from me, if I can get fit. There is more in the tank. I was just trying to stay out of hassle tonight, to be honest."
