Northampton South General Election 2024 results as Labour candidate Mike Reader wins seat
Labour candidate Mike Reader for Northampton South has just pipped ex-Conservative MP Andrew Lewer to the post with a majority of 4,071, the first of four seats to be announced for West Northamptonshire. His victory in Northampton has largely reflected the feeling of the nation as Conservatives have suffered huge losses across the country and the nation has woken up to a Labour majority.
Former MP Andrew Lewer had been the only incumbent member of parliament to contend for his seat again this year after taking the reigns in 2017. Before that, his colleagues from his party have held the seat since 2010.
In the early hours of the morning, Mr Reader’s share of the vote was announced- he ganied 16,890 votes squashing Andrew Lewer’s 4,679 majority in 2019. The ex-Conservative MP took in 12,819 votes in total.
Reform UK appeared to split the right-wing votes as it placed third with its candidate Toby Owens receiving 8,210 votes. The Lib Dems' Jill Susan Hope received 3,193 finishing fourth.
In total, seven candidates appeared on the ballot papers this year in Northampton North. These include candidates from the five biggest parties across the country- the Conservatives, Greens, Labour, Lib Dems and Reform UK. The Climate Party and Trade Unionsit and Socialist Coalition also fielded their own candidates to contend the election.
