Northcott School rated 'outstanding' by Ofsted as a 'place where pupils flourish'

A special educational needs school in east Hull has been hailed as one of the best after receiving the highest possible grade in an Ofsted report.

Northcott School and Sixth Form College in Bransholme was rated "Outstanding" in the latest Ofsted report, an upgrade from its previous rating of "Good". It is a special, co-educational school for pupils aged 3-19 with Autism, Asperger’s, and social and communication learning difficulties within Hull and the wider local area.

The report published on July 2 rated the school outstanding in all areas: overall effectiveness, quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and the Sixth Form provision.

Praising the school, the report said pupils "behave extremely well" and are "fully engrossed in their learning". It said the students also have high levels of empathy for one another and staff know their students "incredibly well".

Northcott School was described as a "place where pupils flourish" and the report said they had "many opportunities to develop their talents and interests". It added: "They take part in an extensive range of activities designed to support them in adulthood, such as working in the on-site salon or cafe. These activities, too, are uniquely tailored to students’ needs, talents and ambitions.

"Careers education is a real strength. Students learn about workplaces, further education and about the community activities they may access in adulthood."

Headteacher Katherine Johnson said: "In the last seven years we have worked tirelessly to improve the standard of education offered and to provide an education that our children deserve."

Last year, the school was expanded to offer more places as part of Hull City Council's plans to step up its provision for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Councillor Linda Tock, the portfolio holder for Children’s Services, said: "This latest inspection report is testament to Northcott’s team of hardworking staff, who are committed to providing a first-rate educational experience to young people with SEND in Hull."
