Northern Lights bathe Coventry in spectacular colour - in pictures
Locals raced to their gardens to watch the Northern Lights bathe Coventry and Warwick in incredible colour last night. The rare spectacle covered the skies across our area in a kaleidoscope of greens, blues, purples and pinks.
It left many staggered at the sight, with residents taking to social media with their images. Some were so stunned that they could see the impressive Aurora Borealis, usually only visible from northern parts of the British Isles, from their back gardens.
It has been said that the lights were visible as part of the biggest geometric storm in almost 20 years. The Northern Lights display occur when charged particles collide with gases in the Earth's atmosphere around the magnetic poles.
But the spectacular light show was not just witnessed in our area, it was spotted across the UK and the wider world. Those who missed it last night may have a chance to see the lights again tonight.
The Met Office has said that, tonight, there could be a repeat of the conditions that allowed the Northern Lights to appear last night.
The exact locations have yet to be revealed, but they were seen from 11pm last night. The Met Office's latest local forecast for our area predicts clear skies tonight after another warm day.
Temperatures could reach as high as 24C today but tomorrow (May 12) could see lead to 'thundery showers' hitting in the afternoon.
