Northern passengers warned of last-minute cancellations and 'significant disruption' on Father's Day

Northern rail has warned of 'significant disruption' on its services on Father's Day this Sunday.

Passengers have been urged to check before they travel on any Northern services across the North West and Cumbria and only travel 'if absolutely necessary' on June 16. Trains could be cancelled, delayed or altered at short notice, the operator said on its website.

The disruption is due to a 'short notice change to the timetable and also a member of train crew being unavailable'. Some services may also be replaced by road transport.

Throughout the day on Sunday, passengers with advanced tickets will be able to travel on 'any available Northern service via any reasonable route'. Tickets will be also be accepted on TransPennine Express trains, on Blackpool Transport and on the Manchester Metrolink.

Northern said: "Services on routes in and around the North West will be subject to significant disruption and short notice cancellations. This is due to high levels of traincrew sickness and non-availability.

"Please check journey planners in advance and travel only if absolutely necessary. Please check before you travel including the last services of the day as they may be earlier than usual. For the latest information, visit our journey check page."
