Nottingham Forest have made a start on shaping Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad for the forthcoming Premier League season with some encouraging early transfer business.

It is a key summer window for the Reds as they aim to kick on next term. Further ins and outs are expected in the weeks ahead, but the club have already laid the groundwork by getting some deals done quickly.

There has been no shortage of transfer rumours regarding who could still be on the way to the City Ground and who could yet depart. So Reds writer for NottinghamshireLive, Sarah Clapson, has delivered her verdict on some of the latest transfer news and gossip doing the rounds...

Hudson-Odoi hat-trick

The past week or so has seen rumours abound concerning the Reds’ top talent. Murillo has dominated the headlines but he isn’t the only Forest ace attracting interest.

Callum Hudson-Odoi has his admirers after a fine end to his first campaign at the City Ground. Three clubs - some of them direct competitors in English football’s top-flight - are said to have registered their interest in the winger.

It is said the Reds have placed a £40m price tag on his head as they have no intention of letting him go. Moreover, the player himself is reportedly keen to remain Trentside.

Sarah Clapson says: It was inevitable this summer would see some of Forest’s star players on the wanted lists of other clubs. Nuno said he was expecting as much when he spoke after the win over Burnley on the final day of last season. The Portuguese knew what was coming.

That Hudson-Odoi is one of those players being eyed up by others is no surprise. He finished last term in brilliant form and showed the ability everyone knew he had.

The time may well come when the Reds can make a lot of money on the initial £3 million they paid Chelsea for the 23-year-old 12 months ago, but with any luck that won’t be for a long while yet. Hudson-Odoi’s value has undoubtedly shot up, but Forest shouldn’t be looking to sell him at this point.

He can be a cornerstone of Nuno’s team in 2024/25. The Reds can build around the likes of Hudson-Odoi, Anthony Elanga and Morgan Gibbs-White.

Maxi-mum potential?

Forest continue to be linked with a number of players as they look to add to the signings they have made so far. The name of Uruguay international Maxi Araujo has recently emerged as one the Reds are said to be keeping tabs on.

The winger plays for Mexican outfit Toluca and has a £17m release clause in his contract. Forest are said to have been in touch with his club, as have Aston Villa. Barcelona are also keen.

Sarah Clapson says: Araujo has attracted plenty of attention with his performances at the Copa America. He has two goals and an assist to his name so far and has played his part in Uruguay reaching the quarter-finals.

A reasonable release clause makes the 24-year-old particularly attractive, even if he does not have experience of European football under his belt. However, reports suggest Toluca would not be willing to accept any less than that fee and are prepared to stand “tough” in negotiations. Araujo’s admirers might have their work cut out when it comes to holding talks.

He is a versatile player, capable of playing left-back and in central midfield, as well as on the left wing. Nuno likes to have players with the ability to operate in a few positions as part of his squad, so Araujo would fit in. He would also provide strength in depth in a key area of the pitch.

There is likely to be fierce competition for his signature, though. Some of the Premier League’s “big six” are reportedly monitoring him, in addition to Barcelona and Villa. A deal could prove difficult to do.
