Nottingham Forest are said to have failed with a bid to sign Corinthians teenager Wesley.

Targeting young players with the potential to increase in value is a key part of the Reds’ transfer strategy this summer. They have already brought in 18-year-old Eric da Silva Moreira and have been linked with other up-and-coming talent.

Wesley fits the same kind of profile. And according to Italian media outlet Area Napoli, the 19-year-old has been on Forest’s radar.

A 25 million euros (£21m) bid is said to have been put forward by the Reds. However, it seems Forest did not get very far with their proposal - and they are not the only ones to have tried their luck in an attempt to prise the winger away.

Napoli and West Ham United were reportedly only willing to go to 20m euros (£17m) for the player, while it is said Tottenham Hotspur could place an offer in July. The fees put forward so far are some way short of the 30m euros (£25m) Corinthians are looking for.

Napoli have reportedly “taken a step back” as they wait for the situation to “calm” down. However, it is said they will continue talks and boss Antonio Conte has met with Wesley’s agent.

There is said to be uncertainty over whether Forest will return with fresh terms. Nevertheless, Area Napoli suggest a move to England “remains the most likely destination” for the Brazilian.

Forest could certainly do with strengthening head coach Nuno Espirito Santo’s attacking ranks, particularly out wide. Moreira became the club’s second signing of the summer earlier this week, although fellow new recruit Marko Stamenic is to spend next season on loan at Olympiacos.

The Reds already have one former Corinthians player on their books. Centre-back Murillo has proved a huge hit since making the move to the City Ground 12 months ago in an £11m deal.

And goalkeeper Carlos Miguel is due to follow the same journey as the defender. He is expected to link up with Nuno’s squad after a reported 4 million euros (£3.4m) release clause in his contract was met.
