Five sets of traffic lights all failing at the same time in and around Nottingham could have been due to the weather, the city council has said. The signals were reported to not be working just before 7am on Tuesday, July 2 before all being reinstated by around 8.30am.

It caused heavy congestion in Western Boulevard and on the A453 at Crusader Island in Clifton in the morning, traffic monitoring site Inrix said. The A610 Nuthall Road, Enterprise Way in Lenton and A60 Nottingham Road in Mansfield were also affected.

A spokesperson for Nottingham City Council said it was a "coincidence" that the failures happened at the same time. They said the cause was undetermined but could have been connected with the weather, which was overcast and around 12C at the time.

"There were three failures in the city and two in the county," said the spokesperson. "It was a coincidence that they happened at similar times.

"The cause is undetermined but could be connected with weather. Engineers were on site quickly to sort out the issues on site."
