A popular pub in a leafy Nottinghamshire village will soon be thoroughly refurbished under new plans to attract more visitors. The White Lion in Bramcote, Nottinghamshire, could be fully revamped inside after pub chain Greene King submitted plans for the changes to Broxtowe Borough Council.

The UK's largest pub group said the alterations to the Town Street venue would improve the experience for punters. Planning documents explained this would be achieved firstly by enhancing customer facilities and secondly by expanding the Lion's kitchen.

Greene King representatives argued this extension was "much needed" as the pub was an "extremely popular destination food outlet". The outside of the Grade-II Listed building, which dates to the 18th century, will not be significantly changed, according to planning documents.

A new catering kitchen would be created in a disused garage, with the existing small kitchen being stripped out and turned into a snug bar area. The existing bar servery would be cut back so more seats for customers could be fitted.

The main trade area would also get new timber and ceramic flooring, a new carpet in the snug and some decorative light fittings. The ladies' toilets will be enlarged to fit in another cubicle, a lobby and a new washbasin.

In a planning document, planning agents Concept IDL, on behalf of Greene King, said: "Our client is aiming to attract more customers to the pub by providing a desirable establishment and facilities for all. The aim is to improve the dining facilities by providing a greater kitchen space and utilising the area with new covers, creating more covers, with an improved WC facility.

"Both the internal works and the external works will be carried out to our client's usual very high standards and will be promoted locally, creating interest around the improvements to The White Lion, along with customers from further afield using this as a destination pub." The planning application is pending consideration by the council.
