Notts County have announced that Macaulay Langstaff will take over as club captain from Kyle Cameron ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. The 27-year-old has taken the armband from Kyle Cameron, who had assumed the role at the club for the last three seasons.

Matt Palmer will support Langstaff as vice-captain as part of what the club have called a “newly-formed leadership group”. Langstaff had another great goalscoring season for the Magpies last term in League Two, following on from his record-breaking campaign in the National League to help the team to promotion.

The Notts striker secured the Golden Boot for the fourth tier with 28 goals in 46 league games, and after another stellar year, there are inevitable rumours surrounding interest from higher up the pyramid. However, acceptance of this role has all but eliminated any fears from Notts' perspective of a summer departure for Langstaff, with commitment shown on both sides as the club move forward under new leadership in the dugout and on the pitch.

Head coach Stuart Maynard said: “Firstly, on behalf of everyone at the club, I would like to thank Kyle Cameron for his service as captain over the last three years. He led the team back into the EFL, and his contribution throughout his time in the role isn’t lost on anyone.

“However, we feel this summer presents us with an opportunity to bring constructive change to the leadership structure within the squad as we prepare to embark on what will be another highly competitive League Two promotion challenge.

“For us, Macaulay has everything you need in a captain of a club this size. He has won the respect of everyone – players, staff and supporters – with his incredible, consistent performances and the way he conducts himself day in, day out. His work ethic is infectious and, as captain, he will play a huge role in creating the working environment we need if we’re to be successful this season.”

Maynard is yet to have the chance to properly coach Palmer, with the 29-year-old suffering a season-ending injury before the former had arrived at Meadow Lane, but the midfielder has made enough of an impression from the sidelines to be granted the vice-captain role.

This move shows that Palmer is likely to feature heavily in Maynard’s plans for next season, with the Notts boss feeling positive about his injury recovery ahead of pre-season.

He added: “Helping him [Langstaff] will be another hugely respected figure in Matt, who so many of the players, including Macca, have told us they regard as one of the most influential players in the squad.

“Matt’s recovery is progressing well and he is going to be a huge figure for us moving forward, both on the field and off it in his new role.”
