Glastonbury Festival is just over a week away, so it’s about time festival goers will be packing all of the essentials for their five-day musical pilgrimage. For some, it will be their first time at the legendary festival, and making sure you’ve got the appropriate footwear is a top priority.

Glastonbury’s size can be unimaginable at times, with the whole festival site spanning 1,500 acres of land, including Worthy Farm and its neighbouring fields used to host the festivities. The huge festival site is more than 1.5 miles in length at its widest point and is surrounded by the "superfence" - a eight kilometre long perimeter fence, reported SomersetLive.

But now, to give fans an idea of just how huge the site is, an interactive map can put the festival into perspective compared to villages, towns and cities across the world. The Glastonbury Map Overlay shows its sheer size. All you have to do is enter a location into the search bar to see how the site measures up.

It doesn't include car parks, pre-erected camping and campervan fields, so in reality, with these included, the festival is a lot bigger. Outside the perimeter fence there are a number of off-site camping areas, as well as 61 separately numbered and colour-coded car parking fields.

The festival site hosts more than 100 stages and tents, a gigantic number of toilets, including more than 2,000 long drops, over 1,300 compost toilets and more than 700 metres of urinals. Emily Eavis, Glastonbury Festival ’s co-organiser and daughter of founder Sir Michael Eavis, previously explained in a special episode of BBC’s Sidetracked, spoke about the purpose-built sewage system the festival has.

As well as the sea of toilets, there are more than 100 bars and more than 500 food stalls. When using the map, the festival’s size is similar to that of nearby town Shepton Mallet, which has a rough popular size of 10,800 (in 2019). The event attracts around 200,000 attendees, as well as hiring thousands of people to help build and operate the festival site, as it boasts an official capacity of 210,000 people.

The festival site also spans a similar size to its namesake, which covers around 3.340 km² in area. However, its population is significantly smaller than its festival, with a population of just 8,297 (in 2021).
