NS&I warns Premium Bonds holders 'we need you to provide evidence'

A Premium Bonds warning has been issued as customers struggle to update name change details. NS&I, which is backed by the Treasury, has explained the process to register a name change after a Premium Bonds customer had a problem updating their details.

One Twitter/X user wrote: "@nsandihelp Hi I received a letter saying they couldn't accept my child's premium bond because he had a different surname. I explained before your systems wouldn't allow me to upload both his birth cert & change of name deed, does this mean I have to start this all over again?"

"Hi there, Kerise. That's correct, as the evidence of identity is different, it wouldn't be accepted. We would need you to provide evidence of identity with the same surname. Lex," NS&I said. The Premium Bonds holder added: "So would the change of name deed not be accepted with the birth cert? as that is no longer his surname from birth anymore, hence the change of name deed poll we did for him."

"The change of name deed wouldn't be accepted as this is not a document that can prove evidence of identity. This would need to be a birth certificate or passport. Lex," NS&I said. No need to create an account or send us any paper.

"You’ll need your holder’s number to hand, as well as your previous and new details." It adds: "We’ve got all the information you need to change your address, contact details and name. Changing your address or contact details.
