Doctor Foster star Suranne Jones was one of the night’s big winners at the National Television Awards as she won Best Drama Performance, while the show collected the prize for Best New Drama.

But Suranne, 37, surprised fans when she walked the red carpet sporting a sizeable baby bump. She had kept her pregnancy secret until now.

Speaking to Yahoo and other reporters following her big win, the actress said: “Me and my husband are so thrilled! We’ve been married nearly a year and a half now. What a wonderful way to move our marriage on and we’re dying to celebrate the new [baby].”

The former Coronation Street star won critical acclaim last year for her role as vengeful wife Gemma Foster, who discovered her husband was cheating on her with a younger woman.

Suranne admits it’s difficult to come across such brilliant parts. She said, “Really brilliant, really complex roles come up once in a blue moon. Doctor Foster came up and one minute you were behind her, the next minute you thought she was mental, you just never knew where she was going.”

The show is set to return for a second series, with filming beginning in September, and Suranne has signed up as a producer this year.

That means she’ll have access to all of show writer Mike Bartlett’s scripts and won’t be kept in the dark about specific plot points, as is often the case on big drama productions.

“I’m producer this year as well … so no lock and keys [on the scripts] this time. As an actor it’s like, ‘Just tell me the story!’, but I’m part of the collaborative team this year,” she said.
