Nuno Espirito Santo hailed an “important step” towards safety for Nottingham Forest thanks to a big 3-1 win over Sheffield United.

The Reds had to work hard and show character to claim the three points at Bramall Lane after they fell behind to a Ben Brereton Diaz penalty. They were far from at their best in the first half but went in at the break level courtesy of a Callum Hudson-Odoi strike.

The visitors were then much improved in the second 45 minutes and clinched the victory courtesy of Ryan Yates’ first Premier League goal and another for Hudson-Odoi. It means they are three points clear of the bottom three with two games to go, but Nuno has stressed nothing is sorted yet.

“It was huge for us. It shows a lot after we conceded, to react and to go in level at half-time,” said the Portuguese, who is still waiting to hear if the club have been successful in their appeal against their four-point penalty for breaching financial rules. “But we have to realise that during the first half, we survived. They were much better than us. Matz (Sels) did well and kept us in the game.

“Second half was totally different. We were much better. Better organisation, more dominant, more in control and produced good moments. We scored and had chances to score even more goals.

“I’m really happy. Happy for the fans because they supported us and helped us survive the final minutes of the first half.

“We have to keep on going. It is not over. It is a big step but we still have two games to go.

“I think it is an important step; a very important step. But we still have to prepare and go because it is not over.

“We still have two hard games to play. The next one (against Chelsea) is going to be very important for us at the City Ground. Let’s try there.”
