There are now 65 Unesco World Heritage Sites that are considered too dangerous for British Travellers - according to the Foreign Office.
Among the cities caught up in the conflict of civil wars and unrest are Saint Catherine’s Monastery in Egypt’s Sinai region, the ruins of the Phoenician city of Baalbek in Lebanon, the ancient Roman ruins of Leptis Magna in Libya, and the Syrian cities of Aleppo and Damascus.
