A police officer holding an attacking dog as a Taser was fired was injured 'during the process'.

The incident happened in Hartlepool when an unaccompanied dog attacked a pet being walked by its owner in Harrow Street, off Oxford Road, on Monday teatime. A photograph taken at the time shows a police cordon in place. A 27-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of having a dog dangerously out of control in a public place.

Police officers who were at an unrelated matter when the canine attack drama unfolded, stepped in. One police officer took hold of the attacking dog while another officer deployed a Taser.

Cleveland Police has confirmed that the officer holding the dog suffered a "minor injury". However, it is not yet clear what caused the officer's injury, how it happened, or what the minor injury is.

A force spokesperson said: "Last night just before 5.30pm officers were on Harrow Street, in Hartlepool, on an unrelated matter when an unaccompanied dog attacked a dog who was being walked by its owner.

"A Taser was deployed as an officer had hold of the dog and the officer sustained a minor injury during the process."

They added: "The animal was then seized and removed to an appropriate facility whilst enquiries continue."
