A busy street in Paisley was locked down this afternoon amid reports a man was allegedly brandishing a chainsaw.

Footage shared on social media shows a man brandishing a weapon in the residential area of Glasgow Road.

The incident, which took place around 1pm, is understood to have unfolded following a car crash involving a member of the public and a marked police car.

It sparked a massive police response, with dozens of uniformed and plain clothed officers appearing at the scene within minutes.

In the footage, a number of police officers and members of the public can later be seen apprehending a suspect.

Images also show a marked police car crashed into the wall of a property where the incident took place - between Buchlyvie Road and Allanton Avenue.

Explaining the area has since been cordoned off by police, an eyewitness told the Paisley Daily Express: "There was a lot of shouting from one of the houses.

“All of a sudden the place was swarming with police. There was about six or seven police cars and an ambulance. Cops in plain clothes were even racing to the scene.

“The sirens were deafening.

“You don’t expect this on a bank holiday Monday afternoon, that’s for sure. Honestly, with the sirens and the shouting and the number of police vans it was like something you see on the TV.”
