Oklahoma Dad Arrested After Allegedly Fleeing Rollover Crash that Killed His 16-Year-Old Daughter

An Oklahoma father was arrested after police allege he fled the scene of a crash that claimed the life of his teenage daughter, according to multiple news reports.

On the night of Jan. 11, Bixby police officers responded to the scene of the crash, where they say they found the victim, identified as 16-year-old Shelby Binney, KJRH reports, citing police. Police reportedly said she was thrown from the vehicle and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The driver has been identified by police as Shelby’s father, Elliott Binney who they say allegedly fled the scene before officers arrived.

“The driver, Elliott Binney, her father, at some point left the scene, he walked to a family-owned business and retrieved a vehicle. We were able to track this vehicle electronically and ultimately made an arrest in the case,” Bixby Police Chief Todd Blish told Fox 23.

According to police, Elliot was behind the wheel of an SUV carrying his daughter and three other family members including his wife, who have also been hospitalized. Witnesses claimed Elliott was driving 70 mph and traveled through a no-passing zone when he crashed, the Kansas City Star reports, citing police.

After the crash, investigators said they found what they claim was an open bottle of vodka, according to Fox 23 and KJRH. Police alleged Elliott admitted to buying the bottle and drinking some of it while driving.

Elliot faces charges of first-degree manslaughter, leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death, and passing a vehicle in a no-passing zone, police said, according to KJRH. He has since been released on bond, the outlet reported, citing authorities.

Following her death, Shelby was described in a Facebook post shared by Oklahoma Xtreme Allstar Cheer as someone who had a “heart of gold.”

“Shelby has been a part of the OXT and OXC family for many years,” the post read, in part. “She was loved by everyone around her. She was a bright light in the gym, a hard working athlete, and the best teammate you could ask for.”

“We miss her terribly,” the organization added. “Please pray for her family and all those whose lives she touched.”

A GoFundMe campaign has also been created to help offset funeral costs for the Binney family.
