What is Alfie's background?

In episode two, Alfie revealed he has lived with his grandparents since birth, and has worked multiple jobs since being a teenager in order to make money to support himself.

In episode three, he then revealed his mother had died when he was five, from a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer. He and Owen released a lantern while in Hoi An, Vietnam in her memory, with Alfie heartbreakingly sharing, "Even though I try not to admit it, I do miss her intensely and I still dream of what was. When my mum passed away, we set [a lantern] off every year with a message attached so to be able to reignite that would be incredible."

What have Owen and Alfie said about Race Across The World?

Speaking about why he signed up for the show, Alfie said, "I think we wanted to take part in the series mainly because we’re both lovers of travelling and have done a little bit of travelling before but never done the whole backpacking, country-hopping situation. It was something that we wanted to try further down the line anyway and we thought it would be such a great experience that it would be impossible to say no to."

Owen added, "We wanted to do this because, as Alfie said, we wanted to go travelling and we’ve never done this sort of thing together. Also, we wanted to put our friendship to the test, see what we can achieve with it. And personally, ourselves we wanted to see how we’d deal in this sort of situation and how well we can do, see if we can make it to the end and maybe even win."
